J. Essington 1sts vs Hanford 1 sts
Essington 50 Hanford 0 Cup Game 5th November 2011
Essington were at home to Hanford in the Owen Plate Cup.
Hanford played and defended very well for the first quarter and resisted Essington pressure. With several missed chances Essington were unable to change pressure into points, it became frustrating. The stalemate was eventually broken when Captain Nick Brittain ran in for the first try of the game. This opened up Hanford and Essington now scored some well taken tries. Alec Siddons used the proverbial show and go from the half way and shimmied his way over, followed by an electric try by Ian Brittain from their 22m line. Lastly in this half Neil Birt took a forwards based ball and drove over the line to score, this was converted by Alistair Cowmeadow. Half time score was 22-0.
At the beginning of the second half Hanford seemed to revive their game and again frustrated Essington for the nearly all the third quarter. This was until Chris Gibbs (Kip) took a ball back inside their defence from the 22m avoiding tackles and scored. Converted by AC.
Maintaining the pressure Essington camped on the Hanford line and with repeated offences the referee awarded a penalty try. Converted by AC.
On 75 mins, Alec Siddons showed his class by again scoring, running the ball in from the half way line in a very determined but tiring effort. Converted by AC. Not wanting to be left out Alistair Cowmeadow took a ball on the 79th minute on the edge of the Hanford 22m and danced through the defence and score, converting the points himself. Essington were pleased to keep a clean sheet.
