I. Essington 1sts vs Birmingham Barbarians 1sts
Essington 50 Birmingham Barbarians 7 League game28th October 2011
Essington travelled to Birmingham Barbarians to rectify the recent slip in form mainly caused by unavailable players and injuries.
In the last two games Essington had not been playing to their potential but Alistair Cowmeadow started the game well by breaking through the Barbarians back line and scoring after only 4 minutes.
This was followed by two tries from Ben, firstly driving through a gap from a line out and scoring, then Mason breaking from the middle of the pitch, setting up a ruck from which Ben picked up and drove over to score his second. Both were converted by Fran Chandler.
On the 32nd minute Andy Barker had a powerful run from the half way along the touch to score and at half time Ian Brittain scored a similar try to make it 0-29.
Following the break, Mark Shingler scored breaking through their defence on the 22m and ran for the line and scored. Converted by Fran Chandler.
Following this, Essington allowed BB into the game. Their forwards were quite strong and they used this to their advantage with driving mauls up the centre of the park. They eventually won a penalty for a dubious offside. The prop took the penalty and burst through the Essington defence to score. This was converted giving them 7 points.
Essington showed their superior fitness and tenacity by continuing to pressure BB. The ball had been distributed and supported well all afternoon. On 75 mins a ball was passed wide, Ian Brittain took his opportunity and scored in the corner.
The last score was from pop pass from Birty to Fran Chandler who ran in from 30 metres and scored a glorious try which he converted. Final score 7 – 50.
Essington are at home to Hanford in the Staffs Cup this Saturday.
